Heath and Safety starts with a clear picture.
Advanced Safety helps New Zealand organisations see where they are, where they need to go and what it takes to get there.
Confidence over complexity.
Problems happen when paperwork says one thing and the work on site says another. From Auckland to Invercargill, Advanced Safety works with directors, officers and senior leaders nationwide to cut through complexity and close the gap between what's documented and what's done.
"I help leaders build health and safety they can stand behind."
I’m Matt Jones, a HASANZ-registered health and safety consultant with over 15 years' experience.
I got into health and safety because my neighbour knocked on my door with two beers and a problem.
His small construction company had won significant work in the Canterbury rebuild and had just been told they would lose it unless they sorted their health and safety out. Within twelve months, that company was a finalist at both the Safeguard and Site Safe awards and the contract was secure.

I built Advanced Safety because I believe leaders should understand their own systems, not outsource them to a filing cabinet. Since 2016, I've helped 500+ New Zealand organisations build real confidence in their health and safety systems, decisions and leadership.
That work doesn't happen in isolation. I founded the New Zealand Health and Safety Professionals network (4,000+ members) and speak regularly on the profession as a safety keynote speaker and as a host on Health and Safety Unplugged, New Zealand's longest-running health and safety podcast (founded in 2019). My book Raise the Standard: Why Good Organisations Go Blind and How Leaders Restore Visibility, launches in October 2026.
My work is not for organisations chasing compliance templates or the cheapest way to tick a box.
I provide practical advice and guidance for senior leaders, officers and boards operating where health and safety decisions carry real risk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are you HASANZ registered?
I am HASANZ (Health and Safety Association New Zealand) registered health and safety advisor. That means my qualifications, experience and ongoing competence have been independently verified against a national standard. See my HASANZ profile here.
Which industries do you work with?
I support businesses across manufacturing, construction, civil infrastructure, property and facilities, utilities and telecommunications, recruitment and on-hire labour, entertainment and gaming, emergency services. The common thread is physical risk and real exposure, not a particular sector.
How quickly can we get started?
Compliance Compass is completed within four working weeks and the client receives a 90-day implementation roadmap they can act on from day one.
Do you work nationwide?
Yes. I work with clients across New Zealand, on site and remotely. Where an engagement needs someone on the ground week to week, an Advanced Safety health and safety consultant delivers it under my methodology and review.
What if we're not the right fit?
I'll tell you early if I don't think we're the right fit. If you're looking for reassurance without substance, this won't be it. If you want clarity you can stand behind, it likely will be.
Trusted by directors and senior leaders across New Zealand's highest-risk industries.
"If you're just looking after your own health and safety, you can easily be steering well away from what is considered best practice. I would definitely recommend Advanced Safety."

Leading construction provider National Group had the right certification and policies on paper. What they didn't have was certainty that their systems were actively used across all of their sites. Previous consultants hadn't delivered anything that actually stuck.
I ran culture and engagement sessions with leadership and staff, audited multiple remote sites against the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA) and turned the findings into a clear, actionable roadmap. The result was policies and on-site practice that finally lined up, consistent safety measures across every project and staff that were actually invested in making it work.
